Honoring God’s Gift of Motherhood

Minister Gordon Sun

What a distinct privilege it is for me to be writing a reflection that will come out on Mother’s Day. I don’t think it’s controversial to say that moms are the ultimate unsung heroes of the church. They’re the ones who remember every snack allergy in the room, who somehow produce a spare Band-Aid exactly when it’s needed, and who can simultaneously rock a baby, help a kindergartener memorize John 3:16, and sip lukewarm coffee without spilling even one single drop.

I’m continually in awe of my closest ministry partner: my wife, the mother of our children. Watching her teach a room full of energetic kids during the week, then lead Sunday school with grace and joy, leaves me speechless. How she does it all is a mystery and a miracle.

To be sure, motherhood is a sacred calling, one that reflects God’s nurturing heart in profound and tangible ways. As a children’s minister, I have been privileged to witness the love, sacrifice, and faithfulness of mothers in our church community. Their dedication shapes not only their own children but also the spiritual life of our entire congregation. Their willingness to serve, even when their own plates are full, is a testament to their hearts of love. So, to all the mothers in our church family: Thank you. Thank you for your steadfast love, your tireless service, and your commitment to raising the next generation in the Lord. Your work is holy, even when it feels unseen.

Today, I’m especially grateful for my own mother, who in 1988 left behind her home, family, and comfort in Taiwan to bring my brother and me to Seattle, all so we could pursue education and opportunity. For years, she largely parented us solo while my father had to travel between continents for work. Mom, your courage and sacrifice built the foundation for everything we are today.

And I can’t forget my grandmother, whose steadfast faith became the spiritual bedrock for generations of her family. As 2 Timothy 1:5 says: “I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded now lives in you also.” Her legacy whispers this truth: a mother’s faith matters eternally.

So, to all the Loises, Eunices, and moms among us: May you feel God’s delight today. You are seen, you are loved, and your work echoes in heaven.
