Sowing, Spreading and Sharing
Elder Paul Eng
"Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness."
(2 Cor 9: 10 )
One of the most enjoyable parts about summer is the harvest. Several members of our small group are avid gardeners, and we have shared lots of fruits, vegetables, flowers, and other plants with each other. Among them were green bean seeds all the way from Heilongjiang Province in China. They grew plump and delicious, and each year we saved the seeds and sowed them again the following spring. This year, we planted pumpkins for the first time from seeds of pumpkins we saved last fall. Incredibly, within a short time, stalks and flowers emerged, were pollinated by bees, and beautiful green orbs that later turned orange came forth.
As we wrap up another season, we can't help but marvel at the miracle of production. God provides the raw material. We do our part to cultivate and water the soil as well as provide the right environment with plenty of sunlight. The produce grow, spread, and benefit the recipients.
So much of what we experience both practically and spiritually follow the same principles: God gives us what we need to be fruitful, but we must cooperate and properly steward the gifts He has given. These include our talents, skills, resources, and relationships. We, as well as others, then benefit from the yield that is produced.
A worship service is a visible example. Brothers and sisters gifted in music from years of practice and discipline lead the singing. Members take the time to learn how to operate the PA system so we can all hear and see. A speaker who labors for many hours on the word of God shares a message. Others with willing hearts pitch in also in a myriad of other ways—arriving early or leaving late to set up and clean up, make coffee, take care of our children, and more. And how can we have a church building and keep the power on? Because God's people work for a living and offer to His house. Every part, big or small, contributes to mutual growth and edification.
What seeds can you grow and nurture? When offered to Him, He will be able to use them and bless His body through them.
