Reflections on the Wave of Layoffs

Elder Steve Hsiao

Back to List

Just after the Lunar New Year, we started hearing waves of news about new layoffs in the tech sector. According to experts who analyzed the causes for the layoffs in recent years, they were mainly the result of excessive hiring during the Covid-19 pandemic and investment restructuring brought about by the development of artificial intelligence. Turbulence and instability in the workplace remind us of the uncertainties we face in life and the unpredictable nature of the future. It also brings us some spiritual reminders:
• The impermanence and limitations of life: layoffs make us to realize the impermanence of our lives and the limitations of our power.
• Learning about humility and obedience: it makes us realize our own insignificance and our need to obey God’s guidance humbly.
• Re-evaluation of the value of our lives: making us re-examine our values, and to cherish the time we have with family more.
• Practice of prayer and surrender: learning to pray and surrender, to seek God’s will, and to experience God’s guidance.
• Trials and growth of faith: learning to face worries, trust in God, experience God, and strengthen our faith in Him.
• Testimony of the Christian faith: holding fast to faith in God and joy in the face of difficulties, making your life a testimony.
• Experiencing true love through trials: experiencing God’s love and comfort and also experiencing the support and care of fellow believers.
• Turning crises into a turning point in life: waiting for God, becoming more deeply equipped and ready to start a new journey.
