Life to Life
Pastor Steven MacDonald
I just read in the news how a young mom cut off the head of her six-year-old boy. Then she made a deranged 911 call that caused the police to check up on what was going on in this home. What they found was a scene one would only expect from a horror film – mom in the back singing, her legs covered in blood.
We should mourn. I cannot imagine what went through that poor boy’s heart in his last moments. I can only hope that God received him in His mercy. We should also cry for all the young victims whose stories are not told, whose daily life is trauma. We should weep and cry to God for them. We should do more than cry; we should be stirred to righteous anger. Then we should get up and find out what it is God would have us do.
It is easy to say these problems are too big and the possibilities are too many. We feel overwhelmed. But each of us can do our part. We can be like the little boy walking down the seashore covered with millions of starfish, picking up and throwing one starfish back into the ocean and then another and so forth. One person told him, “It’s useless; you cannot possibly save them all.” The boy looked at the starfish in his hand, threw it in the ocean and said, “It makes all the difference to this one.”
Would God have you share the life-changing gospel with your neighbors? Yes, He has called us to do so. Would God have you get to know your neighbors, perhaps be a voice of hope and intervention? Yes, that’s a start. Does God call you to listen to others with a caring ear, ready to hear when someone is hurting? Yes, He does. What else would God have you do? Ask Him. Look into the possibilities. Talk with others of like mind. You will find an answer. Then speak up and seek the guidance and support of other believers. Let us act and see what God does.
