Love And Good Works
Elder Paul Eng
“Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.” -Heb.10:24
“And I trust that my life will bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die.” -Phil. 1:20
Ending a full year of an ongoing global pandemic reminds us that nothing in life, not even the number of our days, is guaranteed. For my family and me, this blunt reality hit home as we faced the loss of Mary, sister of my wife, Ruth.
Once healthy and vibrant, Mary poured herself out on others. Throughout her earthly sojourn until the end, she reaped the gratitude of those she touched. Friends, locals, and out-of-towners all came by, called, and sent messages and gifts. This past summer, on one of our visits to her in New York, we met a successful professional in her 50s who had benefited from the community youth program Mary ran at a church in Chinatown in the 1980s. She credits Mary with saving her from going wayward during a phase of teen rebellion. Many former students from her tenure as a college dean expressed how her encouragement got them through tough seasons as young adults. Women of different generations shared how her leadership in their church’s women’s ministry brightened their lives.
Mary’s care for others was driven by her faith in Christ. She used her gifts to uplift others. But like all of us, Mary was not born with faith. Much of it was cultivated while growing up. At ECC, she was nurtured by Sunday school teachers, youth counselors, pastors, and members who modeled selflessness and love for Jesus and His word. They helped direct her toward love and good works.
We might not always see the outcome of our service, but the One to whom it matters sees. Whether with infants, children, youth, or adults, ministry can be both enjoyable and challenging. Sometimes it’s simple and straightforward; other times, it’s gritty and messy. No matter the calling, we endeavor to serve heartily because we are serving the Master. We look to Him, both individually and corporately, for strength in the coming year so our labor for Him will not be in vain. Then, whether in life or in death, Christ will be honored.
