Reflection on a Short-Term Missions Trip
Elder Lei Wang
Last weekend, my wife Yu Zhang and I went on a short-term missions trip to Pullman Chinese Christian Church. The changes within the church since the onset of the pandemic have been significant. Many years ago, Professor Min Chiang Wang and his wife established this church, which is predominantly comprised of
visiting scholars, students, faculty, professors, and their families from the University of Idaho and Washington State University. Like many Chinese churches in college towns, a handful of workers tirelessly minister to a large number of seekers. Over the years, God has used them to bring blessings to countless people, and we have witnessed the fruits of their diligent labor among us.
The church provides a hearty dinner before its weekly Friday Bible study. Preparing dinner for dozens of people is not an easy task. Driven by their love for the Lord and their passion for the Gospel, these workers serve selflessly. Due to job-related factors, most students will leave after graduation, and visiting scholars
will return to their own countries after their work is completed. Consequently, the church experiences slow growth, lacks a dedicated church building, and its workers have to work very hard. The transition of both new and old workers also presents a great challenge, and their contributions often go unrecognized.
By the world’s standards, this might not be deemed a successful church, but in the eyes of the Lord Jesus, it is a church that He cherishes and delights in! They have responded to the Lord’s call by faithfully worshiping and serving Him, shepherding His flock, and zealously sharing the Gospel with friends who come to them. As the Lord said in His letter to the church in Philadelphia, “I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.” (Revelation 3:8) Indeed, what the Lord wants is faithful servants who keep His teachings and uphold the truth. Everything we do, the Lord knows.
Among us, many have come to know the Lord through university churches like this one. Their presence can be seen in various church ministries and services, and the results of the tireless efforts of campus church workers have become a blessing to our church. It is heartening to see young people actively participate in
three-tier short-term missions. We also eagerly anticipate more young brothers and sisters venturing out to revisit the places that once changed their lives, to see God’s work, and to bear witness to God’s blessings.
