Care for the Elderly
Elder Jeff Lu
As the population ages and life expectancy continues to increase, all sectors of society are increasingly aware of the needs of the elderly. In particular, the various challenges faced by elderly first-generation immigrants are more pronounced and require more attention. In real life, in addition to facing physical aging, many elderly people are apprehensive of the feeling of loneliness caused by a shrinking social circle, or the feeling of being abandoned by their family and society.
But we know our God is faithful. His love for us is everlasting and He promises in Isaiah 46:4 “Even to your old age and gray hairs, I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.” Therefore, even in our twilight years, we can still trust God and declare with full confidence “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever” (Psalm 73:26).
God also commands us in Leviticus 19:32 to “Stand up in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the Lord,” reminding us to care for our elderly, respect them, and value every one of them. In addition, we must also show our care and love for the elderly among us, because “and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love” (2 Peter 1:7).
We thank God for leading Pastor Yeung and the brothers and sisters of the Cantonese congregation in the ministry outreach at the Legacy House in the International District in serving the elderly residents there and sharing God’s love, the Gospels, and our testimonies with them over the past two years. May God raise up more brothers and sisters to care for the elderly in our community, so that they can grow old with faith, hope, and love.
