Church History
ECC FOUNDING FAMILIES, 1967
The Evangelical Chinese Church began as a small group of oversea students and
families who met for fellowship on college campuses. Under the leadership of
the Rev. Dr. Paul Shen, the church was founded in 1967 with the vision to
provide fellowship and witness for the Lord to Mandarin speaking Chinese new
immigrants settling in the Greater Seattle area.
Shortly after the Church was established, he returned to his ministry in the
Far East. Rev. John Sun, who now pastors Evangelical Chinese Bible Church in
Vancouver, B.C., was called by the Lord to lead the Church for about one year.
The Lord led Rev. Jeremy Law to lead the ministry at ECC for seven years until
he went to be with the Lord in 1977. Aware of the need, Dr. Paul Shen returned
to Seattle and resumed pastoral care at ECC until 1984 when he became Pastor
Emeritus.
The Lord brought Pastor Simon Chou as our Assistant to the Pastor in 1979, and
Pastor Johnny To as our Youth Director in 1983. Blessed by the Lord, the Church
started an English worship service in 1991 to meet the needs of the English
speaking parishioners. Nickolay Mak served as a Youth Director in 1991-93. In
1996, the Lord led Dr. Sam Law to be the Assistant to the Pastor of ECC to meet
the growing needs of the youth ministry and English speaking congregation.
The Lord has blessed our church with steady growth since 1967. God has also
been faithful in our vision of planting satellite churches in the Greater
Seattle area. To date, we have ECC Tacoma, Eastside Community Christian Church,
ECC of South King County, and ECC of Snohomish County among our sister churches
as we press on with our vision to reach the unchurched and to bring the gospel
to ethnic Chinese in the suburbs.
Demographic changes of the ethnic Chinese population also led us to expand our
ministry to the English and Cantonese speaking members in the Greater Seattle
area. Presently, there are Sunday worship services and Sunday schools for
English, Mandarin, and Cantonese speaking congregations. In addition, we also
have active and growing children's programs that are designed to nurture and
teach our children the Word of God.
While our congregation is mainly ethnic Chinese, we welcome all who desire to
worship, fellowship, serve, and grow in Christ Jesus with us. We hope you will
find the information you need and consider making the Evangelical Chinese
Church your home as well.
